“We’ve noticed Noah has more control with using his left hand, his movements are more fluid, he’s reaching for things a lot quicker.”
Trish, Noahs Mum.

The Challenge

Noah was noted to have a hand preference early on in his life. He has weakness and increased muscle tone throughout the left side of his body and whilst he uses his left hand there is a difference in the movements they can do! Because Noah’s right hand is easier to use his left hand can get left behind.

We hope that through an intensive programme of CIMT at this young age will improve Noah’s awareness of his right upper limb and start using it purposefully.

“We want him to increase awareness of his left hand and arm, (before therapy) he would reach across his body with his right hand rather than use his closer left hand."

The Goals

Our Approach

01

Increase Awareness

02

Muscle strengthening, through play and movement

03

Improve dexterity

04

Improve confidence in using his left hand

05

Develop grasp and release

06

Improve alignment of his thumb and wrist

The Science-y Bit

Infant CIMT involves constraining the child’s stronger arm in a soft lightweight cast and completing rehab of the weaker arm and hand, which for infants is undertaken through play and meaningful functional activities.

Noah had the cast on for 4 weeks which allowed him to focus on only using his affected arm in activities, this increased his awareness of his left upper limb and allowed him to narrow the gap in the skills of his left and right hand at this young age.

Rehabilitation through play helps to stimulate the formation of new pathways for movement and in turn helps to rewire the brain. The high intensity and repetitive use of Noah’s affected upper limb over a relatively short period of time had produced lasting changes not only in Noah's awareness of his upper limb but improved movement can clearly be seen within our assessments!

Ruth - Noah's therapist

“During CIMT with Noah, his parent’s have learnt so much which they can take home with them to continue modified (short daily sessions) of CIMT at home.”
Ruth, Noah’s Therapist.
